Drosera capensis 'Alba', also known as Albino Cape Sundew, is a charming and easy-to-grow carnivorous plant, ideal for beginners. It’s a naturally occurring color variant of Drosera capensis that lacks red pigmentation, so the tentacles stay greenish-white with clear dew instead of red.
☀️ Light
-
Bright light is key to strong growth and good dew production.
-
Indoors: place in a south- or east-facing window.
-
Under grow lights: 12–16 hours/day of strong fluorescent or LED light.
-
Outdoors: full sun to partial sun (morning sun is ideal).
-
💧 Water
-
Use only pure water: distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis.
-
Keep soil consistently wet.
-
Use the tray method: sit the pot in a shallow tray of water (½–1 inch deep).
-
-
Never let it dry out.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Temperature range: 60–85°F (15–29°C).
-
Tolerates lower humidity better than many carnivorous plants.
-
Ideal humidity: 40–70%, but can adapt to less if light and water are adequate.
-
🌱 Soil
-
Nutrient-free mix: a 1:1 ratio of peat moss and perlite or silica sand.
-
No fertilizers—nutrients will harm the plant.
🐜 Feeding
-
Produces sticky dew to trap small insects (like gnats and fruit flies).
-
Outdoors, it will feed itself.
-
Indoors, you can feed it:
-
Crushed dried bloodworms, betta fish pellets, or dead gnats (small amounts).
-
Only feed once every 1–2 weeks and avoid overfeeding.
-
-
Feeding helps, but isn't required for survival.
✂️ Pruning & Repotting
-
Remove dead leaves with scissors.
-
Repot every 1–2 years in fresh mix to avoid compacted soil.
-
Produces plentiful seeds—you can collect and sow them easily.
🌼 Flowering
-
Will flower easily. The alba flowers are white.
-
Flowering doesn’t harm the plant and can be left on.
-
Seeds will germinate readily on moist peat/perlite with light.
